Tod Barracks

A Civil War encampment that once stood at Swan and High Streets in an area now encompassed by the Convention Center. According to documents from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., the encampment was used as a rendezvous point for soldiers on their way to new assignment in the Civil War. Built in 1863, the post was constructed in two months under the direction of United States Engineer John Tod and could accommodate up to 5,000 enlisted soldiers at once. Tod Barracks was located adjacent to Union Station and through 1866, with the last remnants torn down in 1911.
