UNITED METHODIST WOMEN TO CELEBRATE 150TH YEAR WITH ASSEMBLY

Where: Greater Columbus Convention Center

Why: Celebrating 150 years of service and advocacy by turning faith, hope and love into action on behalf of the world’s women, children and youth organizations with a focus on climate justice, economic equality and global justice and peace.

How: The 150th Anniversary Celebration/Deaconess Consecration will be at 9 a.m. on May 18, with the 150th Dance Party beginning at 9 p.m. May 19. Workshops will focus on leadership development, social justice, spiritual growth, transformative education and teens. The Experience Hall will be full of vendors. Speakers include Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, and Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children’s Defense Fund, speaking at 9 a.m. May 19. Leymah Gbowee, recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for her involvement in a women’s peace movement that led to the conclusion of the Second Liberian Civil War, will be speaking at 7 p.m. May 18. Nine female bishops will be featured at 9 a.m. May 20.
